As his alter-ego, "Kid Koala," might suggest, Eric San applies a joyous childlike vision to his music on Some of My Best Friends Are DJs. Three years after his debut album, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Kid Koala returns with a more youthful verve. Some of My Best Friends Are DJs offers less in the way of music, with the 35-minute running time meaning the restless sonic snippets wisely end before his humor has a chance to grate. Mixing sleazy whisky-bar vibes with adolescent antics, his second album never allows the listener to settle. Moments of playful mixing magic are at times followed by baffling inanity as "Skanky Panky" - with its wonderfully shattered Ska rhythm and frantic scratches - runs into "Flu Season", ostensibly a series of beat-accompanied coughs, sneezes, and sniffs. The first thing that draws your attention into the music is how comfortable Brown seems to be in an environment that, anyway is not that strange to him. Used to repetitive rhythms, he moves softly but also firmly along the swinging scales and notes of jazz. Anyway, he can't help rowing to his port, so that some jazz standards become funky exhibitions, especially those supported by the big band. Then, Mr Dynamite's throat, playful in the slow tempos, climb higher and higher, in a desperate need for generating faster frequencies. That shouldn't be the goal. Mr Brown is capable of doing better. He's got the technique, a gifted voice and an enormous musical talent that allows him to explore softer registers. Shouting is not expressing.

However, on the other hand, the experience of dragging a jazz trio into funky grooves is a kind of illumination. James Brown shows able to keep the powerful performances of his funky combos with just a piano, a bass and the drums. Just an experience to take into account. (Amazon.com)

The name says it all - "Gotan" is a twist on "tango", the dance that's famed as "the vertical expression of a horizontal desire. Gotan takes the distinctive sound of the Buenos Aires squeezebox or bandoneon, plus violin plus the basic "slooow, sloooow, quick-quick sloooow" pulse and the sultry attitude of the tango, overlays loping bass'n'drums'n'dub and filters the whole mix through a witty Parisian post-modern sensibility.

The opening track "Queremos paz" (We want peace) samples Che Guevara's 1964 address to the UN General Assembly and "El Capitalismo Foraneo" (Foreign Capitalism) echoes with the ghostly presence of Evita Peron. There are cool reworks of Zappa's piece "Chunga's Revenge" and Gato Barbieri's theme for the movie "Last Tango in Paris".

"La Revancha Del Tango" is the blueprint to some of these tracks however, to truly appreciate this CD and the Gotan Project you must have both albums!

This album is absolutely out of this world; the mix of trip hop, jazz (the Chet Baker cover is beautiful), hip hop and, the main character, tango is just amazing. Imagine Astor, Anibal, the voices of the outskirts of Manhattan (were I've told the hip-hop was born) and Peter Kruder having a joyfull, solid, ethereal, fruitful conversation.

Pink Martini should be known as the little orchestra that walks a fine line in its music. The Portland, Oregon, outfit is deeply influenced by Latin music, jazz, cabaret, cinema scores, and a smattering of other styles. But rather than simply aping legendary artists in their prime--and fooling only a few dim bulbs in the process--band shakes things up by writing its own material, or at least creating tasteful new arrangements that fit within the band’s unique post-lounge framework.

LaVern Baker (November 11, 1929 – March 10, 1997) was an American Rhythm & Blues singer, originally billed as “Little Miss Sharecropper”, then “Bea Baker”. She had taken the first name “LaVern” by 1952, when she began recording with Todd Rhodes and his band.

Born Delores Baker (she is occasionally known as Delores Williams because of an early marriage to a Eugene Williams) in Chicago, Illinois; by 1953 Baker had signed with Atlantic Records, and immediately began releasing hits, such as “Soul on Fire” and “Tweedlee Dee”. Georgia Gibbs scored the bigger hit with her version of “Tweedlee Dee”, for which Baker unsuccessfully attempted to sue her.

Marco (Benny) Benassi is an Italian disc jockey and producer of eurodance/electronic music born in 1967.

He started to DJ in the 1980s and by the 1990s he was helping to create music for other artists, including Whigfield, in the Off Limits production studio. His first solo project success under the name KMC came with "I Feel So Fine" which featured Dhany on vocals and was a hit in Europe in 2001. He followed this in 2002 with "Satisfaction" which was a great success helped, no doubt, by the accompanying video featuring models using power tools.
In 2003 he released his debut album Hypnotica which proved to sell the most copies of an Italian album outside Italy. After this solo success he formed a group with his brother Alle Benassi called Benassi Bros. and together they produced Pumphonia (2004) and Phobia (2005). Louis Armstrong (1901-1971) was a trumpet player, singer, and bandleader, and is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists in the history of jazz.

Armstrong was born and brought up in New Orleans, a culturally diverse town with a unique musical mix of creole, ragtime, marching bands, and blues. Although from an early age he was able to play music professionally, he didn’t travel far from New Orleans until 1922, when he went to Chicago to join his mentor, King Oliver. Oliver’s band played primitive jazz, a hotter style of ragtime, with looser rhythms and more improvisation, and Armstrong’s role was mostly backing. Slow to promote himself, he was eventually persuaded by his wife Lil Hardin to leave Oliver, and In 1924 he went to New York to join the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. At the time, there were a few other artists using the rhythmic innovations of the New Orleans style, but none did it with the energy and brilliance of Armstrong, and he quickly became a sensation among New York musicians. Anita O’Day was an American jazz singer admired for her sense of rhythm and dynamics, and her early big band appearances shattered the traditional image of the “girl singer”. Refusing to pander to any female stereotype, O’Day presented herself as a ‘hip’ jazz musician, wearing a band jacket and skirt as opposed to an evening gown. She cites Martha Raye as the primary influence on her vocal style, although she has also expressed admiration for Mildred Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.

During the late Forties, she recorded two dozen sides, mostly for small labels. The quality of these singles varies: O’Day was trying to achieve popular success without sacrificing her identity as a jazz singer. Nina Simone can be considered an acquired taste--like black coffee, fine brandy, or good cigars. With a voice that's less than perfect, she's nevertheless full of passion and pain, joy and raunchiness in her music. This album covers all those emotions set against the background her of well-arranged orchestration and her exceptional skill as a pianist.

Nina is a genre all her own. Her style varies broadly--from blues to jazz to gospel to folk and political music. This album is not a showcase that variety, merely one facet of it. This album has more of a fun feel to it than some of her other recordings--with songs like 'Marriage is for Old Folks' and 'Gimme Some' as well as the child-like 'Beautiful Land.' Nina is certainly no idealist, though, showing her passion and her pain in songs like 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' and 'You've Got to Learn.'

For Nina fans, this album is a nice break away from some of her moodier, darker work. For those just discovering Nina, this album would be an excellent way to ease into acquiring the taste for her music--splashing a little cream into one's black coffee, as it were.

As a dedicated fan of Nina's musical uniqueness, I've found this to be a very pleasant album that's just right for lifting the stresses of day away and losing myself in a little bit of fun. (Amazon.com)

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley - a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary, is one of them. A 22-track compilation of Eartha Kitt's classic '50s and early '60s recordings, PURR-FECT is Kitt in her purest form. Later in her career, starting with her stint as Catwoman in the '60s TV version of BATMAN, Kitt moved comfortably into the role of camp icon. On these recordings, which certainly have their kitsch value nonetheless, Kitt is less of a goofy oddball and more of an idiosyncratic artist. Her purring, half-spoken singing style was at least as much an artistic choice as it was-as critics have sometimes alleged-a way to mask vocal shortcomings. Throughout this collection, on songs as familiar as "Just An Old Fashioned Girl," "C'Est Si Bon" and "Santa Baby" and as relatively obscure as "Under the Bridges of Paris," Kitt's sometimes-maligned voice delivers wit, empathy and passion as well as any more technically accomplished singers. The stunning, ironic "Monotonous" is a particular highlight.
